What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is an Eastern Asian modality using small, filiform needles roughly the size of two strands of hair. Needles are methodically inserted into different parts of the body to stimulate acupuncture points and meridians. There are more than 350 acupuncture points and fourteen meridian systems that run through the body. Each acupuncture point and meridian is selectively chosen to treat specific symptoms and bring certain systems back into balance. Acupuncture stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system, which allows the body to enter a state of rest and digest, lowers cortisol levels, and inhibits inflammatory cytokines. Acupuncture is an ancient, East Asian medicine that has been reminding the body of its ability to heal itself for over 3,000 years.
What is Qi?
Classical and traditional texts regarding acupuncture state the goal of needling is to regulate qi and blood. Qi is known as the life force of an individual, or its energy. Quoted from one of the most coveted Classical Chinese Medical texts, the Huang Di Nei Jing, is the message that states ""Bu tong ze tong, tong ze bu tong." This translates roughly to when there is free flow of qi there is no pain, where there is obstruction there is pain. Individuals with strong, well balanced qi live a pain free and are robust with good vitality. It is our goal to get every one of our patients to this state of harmony.
What is Chinese Herbal Medicine?
Chinese herbal medicine is a powerful complement to acupuncture. Herbs work deeply on a physiological level to further enhance the effects of an acupuncture treatment.
